So, I’ve had this love/hate relationship with James Patterson since I read my first Alex Cross novel quite a few years ago. See, he writes these amazing stories but he breaks them up into itty bitty chapters. Why is this a bad thing? Well, mainly it’s a bad thing because you find yourself sitting there, at nearly nine o’clock at night thinking, “Hmmm, it’s only three pages… I can do one more chapter.” Before you know it, it’s creeping up on eleven o’clock and five thirty AM is staring you in the face. I literally devour each and every one of his books that I’m presented with. And this was no exception.

As per usual, you have your main mystery coupled with at least one side story, to keep you guessing as well as entertained. However, he really outdid himself this time as there were two side stories as well as the personal interactions of the Women’s Murder Club, plus Lindsay’s partner, Rich, to think about. But in true James Patterson style, he wove all three stories, as well as the continuing story of the Women’s Murder Club, into one seamless tale by the end.

I love the way he works in not just the way Lindsay interacts with her friends – Cindy, Claire, and Yuki – but also their personal lives, like including Claire’s family and Lindsay’s relationship with Joe. It rounds out the characters and brings their choices and decisions into a more realistic light. Not only that, but I find it fun to know everything I can about a character. For me, that’s what brings them fully to life.

There are only two complaints in regards to this book. 1) There wasn’t nearly enough Lindsay/Claire interaction for my tastes. I love the way that Claire mothers her and Lindsay lets her. 2) Cindy. She’s always been a bit on the annoying side for my tastes, but knowing that she’s a reporter, I’ve always tried to put it to the side, blaming it on her doing what needed to be done to get her story. However, as far as I’m concerned, there were points in this book where she was a raving biotch, to put it lightly. And while you can chalk it up to being passionate about her cause, there wasn’t ever really any reason for it, other than Cindy being Cindy.

That said, everything else about The 8th Confession was awesome. There were surprises along the way and a lot of good times. You laugh, you cry, you shout out in disbelief or frustration. If there was ever a master of the rollercoaster emotion, it is James Patterson.

And thus, one more reason I have such a love/hate relationship with the man. Should I ever meet him, I’m afraid I’d hug him, stomp on his toes, and then hug him again.

I’d like to think that he’d understand why, too.

This series started when I was nine. The newer books should be available in libraries and bookstores everywhere. Some of the older ones you might have to scour a used bookstore or find online.

When Alvin Limardo walks into P.I. Kinsey Millhone's office, she smells bad news. He wants Kinsey to deliver $25,000. The recipient: A fifteen-year-old boy. It's a simple matter. So simple that Kinsey wonders why he doesn't deliver the money himself. She's almost certain something is off. But with rent due, Kinsey accepts Limardo's retainer against her better judgment…

When Limardo's check bounces, Kinsey discovers she's been had big time. Alvin Limardo is really John Daggett--an ex-con with a drinking problem, two wives to boot, and a slew of people who would like to see him dead. Now Kinsey is out four hundred dollars and in hot pursuit of Daggett.

When Daggett's corpse shows up floating in the Santa Teresa surf, the cops rule the death an accident. Kinsey thinks it's murder. I accidentally stumbled across R is for Ricochet several years ago while perusing the local library. Little did I know that that one book would open up a world of mystery for me. I have since gone back to the beginning and started the series in the order it was meant to be read. However, if you’re impatient, so far as I can tell, you can read them as stand-alones with only minor references to previous books.

Each novel in the Kinsey Millhone series gets better as we go along. The mysteries become more tangled and the characters more devious and varied. One of the biggest draws to this series for me is is the setting. Having grown up and become a real person in the eighties, I find it fun to watch her walk around town, call everyone and even use the library resources to get the information she needs. Makes you look at today’s private investigators and think, “Man, they’ve got it easy – they’ve got the Internet!”

While I had some idea of who the killer was starting about halfway through, I was still shocked at the outcome of Kinsey’s investigations. I never dreamed it would end the way it did, although in retrospect, it doesn’t surprise me much (now). Kinsey’s leaps of intuition and her cleverness, however, keep you guessing. I enjoy that seed of doubt the author is constantly planting in your mind. You’re reading along and screaming silently, “The butler did it! I know he did!” and then you turn the page and think, “Wait, maybe the maid did it…” That’s a great mystery writer for you. And who knows, maybe the butler did do it.

I highly recommend this series to anyone and everyone.

The Hunger Games ~ Suzanne Collins

You can find this book online or at any major bookstore, Target, or wherever you find books. Seriously. I’ve seen it at the grocery store for heaven’s sake.

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

This book has interested me since I first saw it sitting in the bookstore one day. After so many of my friends simply raved about how wonderful it was, I had to try it out for myself as well. When I discovered Amazon.com had the trilogy for the Kindle priced at $4.38, I jumped on it, figuring that if I only read the first of the three novels, I’d still come out ahead (the first book alone was priced over that for Kindle).

There is a lot to love about this book. The characters are refreshing and encouraging. Despite living in poverty, they take matters into their own hands and find a way to survive and even, possibly be happy. They don’t dwell too much on how awful their life is, although their hatred for the Capitol is vivid and understandable. The characters also evolve quite a bit during the span of the novel, which is a huge plus in my book.

However, there are a few issues as well. The resolution of several plot points was overly predictable and while not a wholly awful thing, sometimes that ending you expected is what you needed, in this situation, I think there could have been better resolution. Despite a bit of a shock at the ending, the ending itself left me a little wanting. My biggest issue, and this might just have been me and not the author’s writing, but I found two or three places where I was lost and wasn’t sure if Katniss was talking to the reader, or talking aloud to whomever she was with at the time. I found myself having to backtrack on a couple occasions and re-read a page or two to clear things up.

All in all, this was still a very good book and was well worth the time I spent reading it. It’s the kind of novel that makes you think and that can only lead to good things, right? I’m looking forward to reading the next in this series as well and have it waiting on my Kindle at home.

Warnings: If you are giving this to your teen to read, I’d definitely recommend it for older teens, fifteen and older maybe, because of the level and amount of violence involved.

The array of young adult novels available in today’s bookstores is getting better and better. Forbidden Mind is further proof of this for me. The author takes a familiar theme – children with superpowers – and twists it into a new and exciting story filled with surprises, horrors, and a touch of romance.

Sam is a pretty strong and gritty sort of heroine. She’s always been one to follow the rules, just so long as the rules made sense. When her beliefs are suddenly challenged, she is forced to adapt and rethink on her feet, something she’s always been good at.

Drake is, even at the end of the story, still a bit of a mystery, but that’s okay. Why? Because what you do learn about him, and his past, endears him to you in a way that you can’t deny. He’s like a battered and abused stray animal – you take him in and nurse him to health first, then you ask the pertinent questions. There’s more to know about him, for certain, and I’m eager to see just what it is.

Forbidden Mind will capture your interest from the first page. It’s fast-pace and intense storyline will pull you in and hold your attention until you’ve read to the very last word. Despite the fact the novel ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, you won’t be disappointed either. The author does an excellent job of bringing you to a stopping point without giving away all her secrets. A definite must-read for both teens and adults alike.

Waking Hours ~ Lis Wiehl

With the help of her old high school crush, Tommy Gunderson, they set out to find out just who – or quite possibly, what – could have committed such a nasty crime.

I loved everything about this novel. From the author’s voice, to her interesting characters and suspenseful plot, you are not left wanting for anything but for them to solve the murder. I also found it fascinating that, despite being very devout, Tommy never thought twice about considering a more paranormal culprit behind the murders. In a similar vein, even though Dani is a psychologist and lives her life based in the reality of the facts at hand, she is only a tiny bit reluctant to take things on faith and ‘go with her gut’, so to speak. It was a nice and realistic view of how people of both faith and science can make room for things they normally wouldn’t for a common cause.

This was my first novel by this author, but I can guarantee that this won’t be my last. I’m hoping to read more about Dani and Tommy in the very near future.

Or you would, if you ever actually read them (unlike me, for the most part… but you won’t hold that against me, right? Right?).

The theme of this novel is a familiar one. Love lost at a young and tender age due to unforeseen – and uncontrollable – circumstances beyond the control of the hero and heroine. Then, miraculously, after many years, the couple finds one another and is offered a second chance. A very popular and often enjoyable storyline. One I enjoy greatly because, at one time or another, we’ve all needed that second chance. But Ms. Kery adds a special, emotional twist to this familiar theme and brings you into the story, heart and soul.

The struggles that Mari and Marc face in making their second chance as successful as they both deserve are ones we all encounter on a regular basis – things in our past causing doubts, our family’s disapproval, the uncertain future with someone you once loved but are only just rediscovering. But what makes this story so special is the forgiveness involved before the healing can start. The absolute strength on Mari’s part to forget the past and be able to move on. Marc’s unrelenting courage to face his past and make good on something that was never his fault.

On the inside cover of this novel is this: Life, love and family! These contemporary romances will strike a chord with you as the heroines juggle life and relationship on their way to true love. This is, I’m guessing, the tag line for Harlequin’s Special Edition line and, let me tell you, this novel definitely did strike a chord with me in more ways than you’ll ever know. Having a baby and being unable to break the news to anyone, the destruction that was wrought because of the addiction Marc’s father suffered from, the unbearable weight of having to bear responsibility of the actions of another person… it all hit home in a way that I hadn’t expected. And the last two pages of the book? Yeah, they had me bawling like a child missing her favorite teddy bear. The faith, the hope, the undying love of a person with such a pure heart was more than I could bear. I couldn’t recommend this book any more highly.

Fantasy lovers all over the world know who J. R. R. Tolkien is and what he wrote. But what we don’t know is why he brought Middle Earth to the world around us. Nor, did we have any clue what inspired him to create the characters we so dearly love. This short yet informative biography answers all those questions and sheds light on many things I’d never even thought about before now.

Having fallen in love with The Hobbit as a kid, I was fascinated by all the hardships and changes Tolkien endured during his lifetime. From surviving World War I to fighting for the right to marry the woman he loved, he met every obstacle with the faith of a true believer and the patience of a man with a greater plan. His dedication, bordering on obsession, to only produce the absolute perfect work, also shows through in his writing.

J. R. R. Tolkien will forever be an inspiration to this writer’s heart. He gave his all to bring both his faith and the love of the written word to all that surrounded him. In my world, there is no greater accomplishment.

Now, while, for the most part, I stay away from RPF (real people fiction), I have stumbled across this author’s Live Journal account and have fallen in love with the way she handles these two particular comedians. She is so totally spot on with her characterizations of these two that you can’t help but love every word of her fics.

So, does this mean that you shouldn’t read it, or won’t be interested if you don’t have any idea who the two of them are? Absolutely not. Why? Because the situations that she puts them into are so real-to-life and so relatable that you can easily fall into the story and forget that you’re supposed to know who they are. She’s just that good.

So, go forth and enjoy!

*Side Note: Thought about this when adding tags… while this story does depict a possible relationship between two men, there isn’t anything graphic involved. No kissing, no smexy stuff, just cuddling. Yeah. Cuddling. Of the best sort.

I stumbled upon this lovely author’s writing by chance. And now, I’m not even sure how, but I’m so very glad I did. I started out as a reader and have since been lucky enough to become her beta.

Anyway… Skye has just completed the second chapter/novella/what have you in yet another wonderful series of stories. The first part, Casey vs. Redemption, can be found here, and while you don’t need to read it, you certainly won’t be sorry you had.

I have long been a sports fan, having grown up in a family that lives and breathes sports of all kinds – baseball, basketball, hockey, tennis, you name it, we watch it – so Eli Gold’s story was an instant draw for me. His sheer determination and desire to become a broadcaster intrigued me while his come-what-may attitude surprised me. Not once did he ever let things get him down. With each bump in the road, he just picked himself up, brushed off the dust, and moved forward. In addition to his inspiring determination, he treats us to many funny and interesting stories from behind the scenes of the many teams he’s worked for over the years, giving you a better idea of just what some of these minor league athletes –and broadcasters – have to endure on their way to the big leagues.

Okay, so I normally don’t include book trailers with my reviews, but while I was looking for Ms. Chase’s website, I saw that she’d included this on the page for the book I’d just finished. So, I figured I’d give you an added reason to read this charming story. Fun, huh?

Merry is one of those characters who can either be very endearing and relatable, or such a complete hot mess that you just want to slap. See, she’s never been out on her own, having taken over the running of her family after the death of her mother. While not very worldly, she’s not exactly naïve either, which is refreshing. I loved Merry to no end, I was happy to see that she was not the kind of first-time-in-the-city girl that has no clue whatsoever. Her innocence and lack of experience is charming and a natural part of her allure, instead of making her seem helpless and weak. I think one of the things that helps with this is the fact that her romantic interest, Jason, finds her rural charm just that – charming. In the end, however, she proves herself as an independent and strong woman with a mind of her own. She’s a wonderful balance of fun and sexy, wrapped up in one woman.

Jason is my kind of guy all around. Pro baseball pitcher, hunky, and carrying a secret. Okay, so maybe I’m not all about the man in my life carrying deep, dark secrets, but in my fiction it’s just fine. I was happy to find he wasn’t arrogant in any manner, but a good ol’ boy from Minnesota with his feet firmly on the ground. Having been all around the world, his experience balances out Merry’s inexperience in a good way. They learn from each other and feed off the other’s emotions and actions in a way that real couples do. Together they make a cute and believable couple. And they’re not perfect, either. Another nice touch. She’s not immediately accepting of his dark secret, but they talk things out and make it work, like you would in the real world. That, in my opinion, makes a story that much better.

Strange Neighbors is a fantastic book that will provide something for your every need. The first thing you notice is the author’s wonderful sense of humor. You won’t go for more than a page or two without a giggle of some kind, and most likely a full out laugh. The second thing you notice is that the building they live in? Yeah, it’s peopled with nothing but the oddest of critters – a ghost, shifters of every kind, a couple of witches, and a vampire in the basement. Lastly, you are sucked in and held by the wonderful budding relationship between Jason and Merry. And I don’t mean just the sex – although that by itself is a reason to read this novel, hot, steamy and very satisfying – but the whole ritual of finding and getting to know someone well enough to fall. I love how all the elements of this story work together to build a better and more complete world. I also loved the fact that the shifters in the building aren’t the kind you’d expect, either. All in all, there’s not anything you’ll find to disagree with here.

I ran across this book online somewhere and was rather intrigued. When I found it in the local Barnes & Noble, I decided that I just had to have it. There is nothing I love more than fresh baked bread. Even fresh baked cookies come in second in this case. And making bread by hand is such a joy. However, when you work full-time, bread baking becomes relegated to the weekends due to serious time restraints. I mean, really, even if I was a stay at home mom, who really has three or four hours a day to dedicate solely to bread baking?

So, I’m really excited to finally have this book. I’m anxious to dive in and see if I can really have fresh, hot bread on the table at dinner time (without playing hooky from work, that is). Book Woes

Wow, bet you never thought you’d see a post like this from ME of all people, huh? Well, have to say this much… lately I’ve run into some less-than-stellar writing and it really annoys me. Now, I’m not talking about just not enjoying a book because I’d never do that. Just because I hated it doesn’t mean you might not love it, right? To each their own and have fun with it. My opinions are just that – my opinions.

What I’m talking about is just amateurish writing. And while I will never, ever name names, it bugs me sometimes. I mean, there are a hoard of really good authors out there that can’t get published and, here I sit, reading a book that sounds like a twelve-year-old wrote it. And even then, that’s not even fair. I mean, weren’t Christopher Paolini and Amelia Atwater-Rhodes both teens when they were first published?

I guess what’s irritating me is that this book has a great premise and really interesting characters… it just falls flat in the execution. Is it wrong of me to feel slighted?

On a happier note, my other woe at the moment is… what to read next? I’ve a collection of books at home to delve into as well as more than a few here at work. Just a peak into a little of what may be coming your way soon…

But it makes you wonder if he could have changed his own fate, since he absolutely orchestrated it, with a little help from his friends…

Passionate, emotionally heart-wrenching, and 110% honest is the only way I can truly describe this horrifying story of an abused boy who never got the chance to make it to manhood. It is a story that needs to not only be told, but read and shared. It’s a life lesson in many ways. You never know why that woman was such a cow at the bank, nor do you know just why that quiet, shy kid really is the way he is. It reminds us to look deep into ourselves and remember that not one of us is free of flaws and, because of that, we shouldn’t judge others so harshly… without first knowing their story.

Despite being a difficult read due to the emotional edge, it is definitely more than worth the time and money spent.

On the Beat of Passion is by far the best in the series to date. Both John and Cassandra face trials that could easily break their marriage – and their spirits – if they allow them to. Add into that a psychotic bad guy (one of the best to date!), sometimes too much family, a healthy dose of drama, and a whole lotta steaming interaction between John and Cass and you wind up with a story you can’t stop reading.

Filled with nonstop action, On the Beat of Passion sucks you in from the very first page. Slowly the story builds, adding detail upon detail, until the shocking resolution at the very end. The author not only tests the inner strength of each character individually, but she also tests the marriage of John and Cass, pushing it to its very limits. Will it break? Will they break? There’s only one way to find out… go pick it up and see if you can put it down.

Books, Books, Books…

Yesterday seemed to be my day for books. First, I get an e-mail telling me that yet another book has been mailed from PBS. This book, Killer Year: Stories to Die For has been on my wish list for quite some time now and I was excited to see it become available.

The next thing I discovered is that I had won a contest at Bitten by Books! I was chosen to receive a $50 Amazon.com gift certificate from the Michelle Rowen contest. I’m eternally grateful to both BBB and Ms. Rowen for that one! And if you enjoy paranormal books and haven’t stopped by BBB yet, what are you waiting for? Always a contest of some type going on and they’re so very easy to enter (and win!).

I was feeling pretty good about my good fortune and then I arrived home. To a stuffed mailbox!

Yup, your favorite crazy lady had hit the proverbial jackpot.

First, I got this:

G. I. Joe Front Line Volume 4: One-Shots. Yes, my friends, a G. I. Joe graphic novel. I know, I know, I’m a dork. But I squee’d in delight just the same. Come on, you’re talking to a girl who owns the cartoons on DVD!

Next, was this:

Holly’s Inbox by Holly Denham, is another I’ve waited a long time for. The entirety of the novel is told through e-mails sent to Holly via various people in her life. The idea intrigued me and thus, I had to order it.

Lastly, I got a double-bonus:

The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance.

Both of the above books are collections of short stories by various authors (as is the Killer Year anthology from above) and both center around vampires (although this does not apply to the Killer Year anthology, we won’t hold that against it, right?). Many Bloody Returns has a cute idea surrounding it – all the stories deal with vampire birthdays. Hey, sounds like a great idea to me! The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance is just that – a collection of romance stories containing vampires. Both books are stuffed full of my favorite authors – Charlaine Harris, Kelley Armstrong, Jim Butcher, P. N. Elrod, Kimberly Raye, Lilith Saintcrow, Karen Chance and more. Plus, the added benefit of containing stories by authors I’ve always wanted to try like Rachel Vincent, Susan Sizemore, Shiloh Walker, Rachel Caine, and Jeanne C. Stein. So, I can’t lose with either of these, can I?

Oh! And I almost forgot – both of these last books were won from The Qwillery, a blog hosted by my friend, Qwill (but of course, what else would you think she called herself?). If you like books (and hell, you MUST otherwise you wouldn’t be here reading, would you?) then you really need to check her blog out. And lookie – she even has a shiny new contest going on!

What a sick and twisted story! Gretchen is a psycho woman to be sure, but she really draws you in and you want to listen to her, need to listen to her... The entire cast of characters in this novel are interesting and intriguing. From Archie Sheridan, the cop Gretchen held hostage and tortured to his partner Henry. From the young and exciting reporter, Susan Ward, to her wayward mother, Bliss. Every last one of them will keep you turning the pages at mach speed! You'll not be able to put this book down!

I also have to add in here that I won this book in audio format in an online contest. I’m not sure if this was the proper book to introduce me to the wide world of audiobooks because, well, it’s just downright creepy (aren’t all serial killer novels supposed to be?)… and I’d be driving down the freeway, making faces at my steering wheel. LOL

The Second Date ~ Mary Lydon Simonsen

The problem is that she has very specific criteria as to who Mr. Right is. Sonia is beginning to think that such a man is not out there until.... Set in the late 1980s, Sonia is surrounded by an extended Italian family, a caring, but over-bearing mother, warring aunts who use family funerals to stage full-blow tragedies, and a close friend, whose main goals in life are to get pregnant and to help Sonia find true love. The Second Date explores friendship and love in the heart of the Italian-American community where food is second importance only to love.

A wonderful story about how two seemingly opposite families come together and grow throughout the years. The story focuses on young Sonia who, at almost 30, is still not married, much to her mother's horror. The Second Date details her courtship with the charming Nick Santangelo and shows just how true love can conquer the worst of mistakes, as well as obnoxious family members.
Whether you're Italian or not, you're sure to love this novel. It's full of sweet stories, family togetherness and a lot of laughs. Ms. Simonsen's style of writing puts you in mind of a documentary, but you experience none of the disassociation you experience while reading one. And while that may not make any sense to anyone other than myself, I do believe her unique writing style is the biggest charm hidden within this novel.

Alienation Victim ~ Crystal Brewton

David Succaar sometimes felt his name really did classify him. His name was often mispronounced 'sucker', and he was often accused of being just that. It had never occurred to him that his own children could be turned against him by his angry and spiteful ex-wife. He had never heard of Parental Alienation Syndrome, but he learned... and he learned the hard way.

What an anguishing story! David Succaar just cannot catch a break – and so much of that is his own fault. Even when you think things are finally going his way – a new life, new wife, new family – it still all comes crumbling down around him.

His is both victim and instigator. There is no doubt he is seriously victimized by his cruel and vindictive ex-wife, however, he ups the ante all on his own by turning his rights as a father into an ongoing obsession that cannot possibly end well for anyone involved.

Ms. Brewton’s stark prose brings the bleakness of the situation to light in a beautifully dark manner. You feel David’s pain and frustration in vivid detail as you are swept away as his life unfolds before your eyes.

Can David possibly get his happily ever after? You’re going to have to read and find out then, aren’t you? Otherwise you may just never know whether this well-meaning but misguided man will find peace in the end.

A definite must-read that is currently (as of this posting) free at Lulu.com. So, you see, there isn’t any reason to dawdle and not go pick it up.

Beautiful Mess The Story of Diamond Rio ~ Diamond Rio with Tom Roland

Country music super group Diamond Rio took six very different men, melded them together and became an award winning act. Despite their differences, many serious setbacks, and a lot of tough challenges, they managed to pull through even the hardest of times and not just stick together but stay friends as well. This is their inspiring story of how they did just that.

I was absolutely amazed at the perseverance and complete faith shown by all six of these men. Through numerous lineup changes in the beginning to a year full of disasters, never once did they let themselves or their group down. When one was having trouble, the other five rallied around to help and support them.

I also enjoyed the way the book was set up – you start with the problem that almost destroyed the group and then you moved into the beginnings of Diamond Rio’s core. From there, you are treated to a short bio on each of the members and after that, you come back to the problem that almost pulled the group apart at the end.

As you see in the resolution, they weathered even that horrible storm to stick together for twenty-five years. They are just an amazing group and I am totally in awe of all they have gone through for the sake of their music. A truly inspiring story that will bring you to tears at points and have you laughing out loud at others.

A wonderfully written epic fantasy in the making. Answered just enough questions to keep you from going nuts and raise just a few more to keep you interested. Fun and interesting characters and a well thought out fantasy world.

Being a long-time lover of a good fantasy novel, I am always rather wary when entering new realms. I cut my teeth on the Dragonlance novels by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman as well as the ever-popular Shannara books by Terry Brooks. After reading such masters, you are often left disappointed. Christopher Paolini certainly did not disappoint me one bit. His word is large and varied and his characters endearing, aggravating, and fun to hang around with.

I am anxious to start Eldest!

Sapphire and Gold ~ Penny Rader

On her way out of Philadelphia, she stumbles across a bear and ends up in the river.

Sea Captain Derek Tremaine is guilt-ridden over the disappearance of a small girl left in his care as a youth. Always searching for her, he hears she may be alive and travels to Philadelphia where he discovers an unconscious young woman in the river. She bears a strong resemblance to the mother of the missing girl who has haunted his dreams. He is drawn to assist and protect her as she sails with him to Williamsburg in her hunt for answers about her life. But will the truth give them peace and allow their growing love for one another to blossom? Or will it drive them apart?

Very well-written and intriguing. Love a story that has a bit of mystery mixed in with the romance. And while I really wanted to smack Lexie at times, I did truly understand why she was so insecure and stubborn. Her world was shattered by one overheard conversation changing everything she once thought true and right about her life. Thankfully, for her sake, she does grow and overcome her insecurities, thanks to Derek Tremaine.

All in all, a really good historical read that I would highly recommend to anyone. This is the first historical novel that I’ve read that takes place at least partially on a ship. And get this… it has nothing to do with pirates. LOL

The Lost Symbol ~ Dan Brown

The Lost Symbol is the third installment in the Robert Langdon series by Dan Brown.

My short review because I enjoy these books a lot and might let a spoiler slip. LOL

While not nearly as action-packed as either of the first two Robert Langdon novels, The Lost Symbol was still an engrossing story stuffed full of mysticism and those bizarre trivial facts that Dan Brown is so fond of. There were also a few 'OMG, you just did not do that!' moments as well as one 'Holy guacamole, I didn't see that one coming!’ Well, at least for me, I didn't see it coming. I know of at least two people who will, after they read this, tell me they knew since page such-and-such that that was what was going to happen... but whatever, I think I'm digressing yet again...

Two ARC’s

My husband cringes every time I tell him I’ve won a book. Because well, obviously just buying them isn’t bad enough. And then add into it the fact that I review books and well, danger ensues.

So, this week, I have two ARCs – Advanced Reader Copies. And I just love these things… nothing sweeter than reading a book months before it arrives in stores, right?

The first of these two books is Searching for Pemberley by Mary Lydon Simonsen. Previously published under the name of Pemberley Remembered, it is a sequel of sorts to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.

Maggie Joyce, a 22-year old American, arrives in London in the summer of 1947. Although the war has been over for two years, the British are still recovering from six long years of war. Despite continued rationing and evidence of the destruction caused by German bombs, Maggie, who grew up in a Pennsylvania coal town, is delighted to be living in one of the great capitals of the world. After weeks of touring the sights in London, Maggie visits Montclair, an 18th Century Georgian country house located in the Peak District of Derbyshire, because she has been told that the former residents of the mansion, William Lacey and Elizabeth Garrison, were the inspiration for the characters of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austen’s masterpiece, Pride & Prejudice, and that Montclair is the novel’s Pemberley.

During her visit to the nearby Village of Crofton, Maggie meets Beth and Jack Crowell, both of whom have ties to the Lacey family and Montclair, and who know if the legends associated with the house and Fitzwilliam Darcy are true. Maggie is befriended by the Crowells, and they share stories of the real people who inspired the Darcys, the Bennet sisters, Lady Catherine De Bourgh, and many of the other memorable characters portrayed in Pride and Prejudice. As their friendship matures, the Crowells reveal the devastating impact that the First World War had on their families—effects that are still being felt 30 years later.

While learning about the romance of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet, Maggie falls in love with Rob McAllister, an American who served as a navigator on a B-17 heavy bomber and who flew 30 missions over Nazi Germany. The effects of seeing planes being shot down or burst into flames is seared into his memory, and Rob’s wartime experiences have left him with a reluctance to make any decision that affects anyone other than himself, and that reluctance has consequences for his relationship with Maggie,. This might provide an opportunity for Michael Crowell, who comes out of nowhere and completely throws her off balance. Does he have a chance with Maggie?

Now, this book intimidated me a bit as I know zero about Pride and Prejudice. However, I’m a little over one hundred pages into it and am enjoying it thoroughly. Will update again once I’ve finished it. Searching for Pemberley will be released from Sourcebooks in December 2009.

The second ARC I won in a Twitter contest via St. Martin’s Press. It’s a dark fiction novel called The Birthing House by Christopher Ransom. I love a good, dark novel, so I am very anxious to get into this one.

It was expecting them.

Conrad and Joanna Harrison, a young couple from Los Angeles, attempt to save their marriage by leaving the pressures of the city to start anew in a quiet, rural setting. They buy a Victorian mansion that once served as a haven for unwed mothers, called a birthing house. Thus begins a story of possession, sexual obsession, and, ultimately, murder, as a centuries-old crime is reenacted in the present, turning Conrad and Joanna’s American dream into a relentless nightmare.

The Birthing House is scheduled for release from St. Martin’s Press this Tuesday, August 4, 2009. It’s secured its place to be read next.

I really don’t know where to start with this novel since there are just so many appealing aspects…

I guess I will start with the voice – this is the first book I’ve read by Ms. Kittredge and I am now a fan. Plain and simple. The style of writing she uses with this story is just magical. Very old world with a present-day feel. I don’t know if that makes any sense to anyone but me, but there it is. When I first began reading, I almost expected it to be set in the past with the way the style made me feel. I was in for a pleasant surprise, however.

Next you have Pete and Jack. Pete is a detective inspector with more troubles than she cares to count. Pete is gritty, tough, but often insecure and unsure of what she’s doing. She’s very endearing with the way she never gives in or gives up and just keeps plugging along. Jack… what can I say about Jack aside from the fact that he’s an ass? But, he’s the kind of ass we all have in our lives – the one we can’t just say no to, the one that we love despite the fact we want to pop him in the jaw at any given time. Together, he and Pete make up an otherworldly dynamic duo, fighting the paranormal and saving children.

All in all, Street Magic is a wild ride through both mundane London and Black London – London’s secret magical side. A wonderfully written and intense urban fantasy. If this first novel of the Black London series is any indication, it’s going to be a great series.

A Most Lamentable Comedy ~ Janet Mullany

Billed as ‘regency chick lit’, A Most Lamentable Comedy is a sure-fire hit. I have never laughed so hard at a historical novel as I did with this one. I was completely reminded of a regency-era Bridget Jones’ Diary sort of thing. The best part had to be the ‘edited’ letters that are written throughout the course of the novel, leaving you to see what might have been said and what really was said…

Lady Caroline would totally fit in with today’s society. Completely absorbed with obtaining a comfortable life for herself, she never once stops to think that maybe, just maybe, the object of her affection is conning her too…

Nicholas Congrevance is a gigolo for all ages. Having hired out his manly services in the past, he’s ready to find himself a wealthy woman to settle down with… And I’m sure you can see just where this is headed.

Insanity ensues and you are whisked right along with the players. Even more entertaining is that its not just the main characters plotting and scheming but everyone involved in the story! Really and truly a wonderful novel sure to brighten your spirits.

Rain at Midsummer ~ Teresa Noelle Roberts

This was a different kind of story, but in a good way. Reminds me a bit of when I first started reading books from the Dark Sun realm of Dungeons & Dragons – a desert world with few oasis here and there… and while the world that Rain at Midsummer is set in isn’t quite that desolate, it still put me in mind of that. But then, I’m known for making strange associations now and again…

All in all, the story was well-written with a likeable hero and heroine. Jaenna, an escaped slave, is intelligent, eager, and adapts to her new role as a free woman quickly. Nikos, the Lord of Thermanae, isn’t happy in his role as the new lord, but he doesn’t exactly shirk his duty either. He is the perfect compliment to the shy and insecure Jaenna.

I think that if you like fantasy worlds and stories about finding love in unexpected places (like the woman falling at your feet maybe?), you’ll enjoy this novella. Ms. Roberts creates a familiar world that holds so many surprises and possibilities.

Next, I would really love to see a story about Dela and her love. I really liked Dela and would love to read more about her and how she and Nikos came to be such good friends.

Red-Headed Stepchild ~ Jaye Wells

Sabina’s cast of supporting characters is just as fun and interesting as she is. From her cranky grandmother, to her new-found friends along the way, they’re all keepers. Even the mean and nasty ones.

Red-Headed Stepchild is an action-packed, fast-paced urban fantasy romp that you can’t put down. Sabina’s wise-cracking style reminds me a lot of early Anita Blake who was notorious for firing off one-liners while battling a horde of angry vamps. You’re sure to laugh your tail-end off (or in my case, secure yourself a place in the monthly random drug test line if you read it at work) and that’s not all. Jaye Wells will take you through every emotion possible before you’ve finished with this book.

So, now go on and pick it up. And good luck putting it back down. :)

Dangerous Ties: Liaison ~ Anya Howard

My apologies, I have no blurb for this last story in the Dangerous Ties anthology. Both the book cover and the website have inaccurate information regarding Ms. Howard's contribution.

That said, I think that Liaison might just be my favorite of the three. Written in an archaic style reminiscent of Dracula and Carmilla, Anya Howard takes you back to a secluded village in Germany where odd things have been known to happen.

Marcel arrives to take a teaching position instructing the women of the village. Not long after his arrival, he spies four of his students engaging in a sexual ritual outside his cottage. Soon after, one of his students begins acting oddly.

From there, the quest begins. Carina comes to him, offering herself to him. For the sake of propriety, he turns her down... and nearly costs her her life. A very well-written and engaging tale of vampires and magic, Liaison is a sure-fire pleaser to anyone enjoying a good old-fashioned vampire tale in the style of folklore and not popular fiction.

Kiss & Hell ~ Dakota Cassidy

Hell’s not the only thing that’s hot in the sinful new novel from the author of Accidentally Dead.

Delaney Markham doesn’t just see dead people, she hears them too. And FYI—communicating with tortured souls all day can really wreak havoc on your love life. Sans boyfriend, Delaney makes the best of her gift by holding séance's to make ends meet—that is until one incredibly annoying ghost just won’t go away.

Besides being sinfully hot—in a college professor sort of way—all signs point to Clyde Atwell being much more than the ordinary spirit. In fact, he’s a newbie demon whose first assignment is to take Delaney back down to hell with him. Yeah, like that’s going to happen on the first date.

(I don't think there are any spoilers below, but I suck at that kind of thing so consider yourself warned.)

Delaney has got to be my favorite of Dakota's characters to date. She's the most well-rounded and amusing woman I've read in a long time. Now, I'm not knocking Marty, Nina or Wanda (the gods only know, I don't want Nina to unleash that sharp tongue of hers on ME), but the were, admittedly, pretty self-absorbed, which is precisely what their stories needed them to be. Delaney, while being focused on herself, was also dedicated to her brother Kellen, her six mutant dogs, and her best friend, Marcella...who has issues of her own. And the times that she turned inward and thrust the hero violently away, well, you got it. I mean, he IS a demon after all, right?

And Clyde... what can I say about Clyde? I'm a lover of geeks to begin with, so a smart man with a hot bod is like my total dream date. Add to that the reality that he spouts useless trivia (something I've been known to do) and seems to know every 80's song ever released (says she who is listening to the 80's on 8, XM Channel 8, All 80's all the time) and you have a fun, annoying, hot and amusingly irritating man for the new Ghost Whisperer. Did I mention he was hot? And good in bed? I did? Oh. Sorry.

One of the things I love best about Dakota's novels is something I tend to find so rarely - her side characters, the supporting actors, if you will, are just as well-developed and just as interesting as the main couple. They have their own stories and are just begging to have them told. So often the supporting characters are just there to help the story along and you know that that's all they're there for. You don't hardly notice them, nor do you care. Not so in this case. I want to know more about Kellen, Marcella, Delaney's mom and hell, even Satan interested me! Sequel anyone? Please? I really wanna know what Marcella did...

I think that, in the end, with every book Dakota becomes a stronger writer, and a better writer. Not saying that the first three Accidental books are crap, they're not - they're all fabulous stories on their own. I'm just saying that Kiss & Hell has just raised her proverbial bar. It's my new DC favorite and I'm positive it'll become one of yours as well.

Dakota? I love you, you know I do. Thanks again for another laugh-riot of a novel. Princess is rubbing her hands, biding her time until she's 30 so that she can start reading them as well. Her first reaction when I showed her Kiss & Hell? "Mommy! It's not an Accidental book! Isn't she writing them anymore?" LOL An accidental fan in training, that girl. But, I pacified her by letting her know that The Accidental Demon is forthcoming. She's a happy Princess now.

The Year 1000: What Life Was Like at the Turn of the First Millennium ~ Robert Lacey and Danny Danziger

(Couldn't find a good blurb about this book, but this review sums things up nicely).

In this book, Lacey and Danziger break the year 1000 into twelve chapters, one for each month, and include important events preceding and following that year. The authors then take you back in time to live the life of an anglo-saxon peasant (contrasted with the life of the privileged) on a month-by-month basis. Having read a great deal of English and European history, I found the book well written, accurate (scholarly in its research while almost casual in its style) and placed in such an "every man" perspective as to be an engrossing read. It is a quick read with interesting period illustrations kicking off each chapter/month.

And I think that's enough for now, don't you? LOL

I will admit this much to you. I stumbled upon this book by accident. I was subscribed to Ms. Black’s newsletter. Or someone’s newsletter and saw the announcement for this new, upcoming book. It looked good, so I went and added it to my pre-order queue at Amazon.com and promptly forgot about it.

And then it arrived.

Wow, am I glad that I ordered this book!

While racing against time, Marrok and Olivia try to find the secret to opening the Doomsday Diary and thus freeing Marrok from Morgana’s curse of immortality. They are also forced to exchange energy – through sex – in order for Olivia, an untransitioned mated witch – to remain strong and healthy.

I’m probably going to get yelled at for this but, at times there was a bit too much sex and not quite enough action for my tastes. But then, honestly, I’m a relatively new convert to romance of any kind, so take that with a grain of salt. If the sex helps to advance the story line, then I’m all for it. But there were some times when I was wondering if it was more to fill the pages than anything.

However, with a strong story and likable characters – as well as those you love to hate and even one you’re not so sure about – you almost don’t even notice the bumps in the road along the way to the exciting conclusion. A definite must-read for any fan of the Arthurian legends and Morgan Le Fay. I’m very excited for the rest of this series.

This short is no different. You feel for Jim and are torn between his duty and what his heart is telling him, just as much as he is. .

And you fear and worry for Tia. Will he do it? Will they just ride off into that lovely desert sunset? Or will love overcome and defeat the evil of the magick? Guess you’re going to have to wait and see for yourself.

In-between novels, I decided to read a couple of shorts I had stored on my Kindle to pass the time. I found two by Jamieson Wolf.

The first, The Wakeful Book of Desire, was a free read I picked up somewhere, although now, I couldn't tell you just where. LOL It was an odd sort of collection of mini-mini stories that all flowed together. Very unique and very well done.

The second, Starlight, Starbright, is a free read available at Jamieson's Yahoo group, here. It tells the story of what happens when wishes do come true. And at 42 pages, it is steamy, steamy, steamy! A very cute and well written short that I highly recommend. And now, I need to go and buy some new books!

Do or Die was my first of Ms. Mathews novels. I can safely say that I will be going back for more before long.

Although there isn't any explicit content, there is suggestive drawing. That said, the story behind this was more complex and less fluffy than the Harlequin Pink titles I've read. It's a cute, quick read and well worth it.

I haven't had a chance to read much manga lately and for obvious reasons. It takes me about 45 minutes to an hour to read one volume. And when they're $10 a pop, well, I don't invest in very many. So, I have to rely on PaperBackSwap to help feed my addiction. So, I was rather excited when I saw this pop up as available on my wish list a couple weeks ago.

The artwork in this manga is just gorgeous. Very dark and angelic. The story is enjoyable but the volume was much too short! Just as you're starting to get to the real story, it ends. But alas, I find that all too often with manga because, like comics and other graphic-type novels, you only have so many pages... ::sigh::

Overall, I enjoy it and cannot wait for volume 2 to arrive!

Niall Chandler is emotionally damaged. She’s been forcing herself through the motions for the last three and a half years until… Until the über-sexy Vic Savian comes to her rescue one night outside her apartment. Neighbors that had no idea about the other, they come together that night and spontaneously combust. Vic is sexy, driven, and elusive. Niall is beautiful, intelligent, and every man’s dream. Can such an explosive relationship move beyond the physical and become something more?

As emotionally intense as it is sexually explosive, Wicked Burn is full of real feelings and true heartaches. Finding the strength to overcome what has gone before is a challenge each and every one of us faces every day. Unbeknownst to Kara, Marc’s a vampire trying to live a normal life. When her skincare salon produces a special serum that results in several fatal love bites, she doesn’t know where to turn. Hoping to keep her safe, Marc runs away. As their lives spin into separate paths, they find that what could tear them apart is the one thing that will ultimately keep them together.

I am always on the lookout for a good vampire story, especially one that breaks out of the usual stereotypes. And while the ending was a bit common (although rather unexpected on my part), the story on the whole was very good, and different as well.

Marc does his best to pass as human and he had me fooled. He was just your every day mild-mannered hotel exec taking it day by day… or was he? Apparantly not! And Kara, love that she not only had her own business but also that it was a salon. Nice to see her putting her creative talents to use within the story as well.

The only issue I had with the story in general was that it was too short. Damn those word counts anyway! And yeah, it goes both ways – the heavens only know I’ve run into entirely too many that should have been cut off several hundred pages sooner than they were… but I digress.

Anyway, it wrapped up a bit too quickly for me. I’m a detail junkie (thanks sooooo much for THAT one Mr. King) and would have liked to know more. But I was happy, I discovered what I needed to know and then moved on to the personal finish, which was very well done. Marc and Kara got their HEA and it made for a nice finish to the story. Overall, I loved it and would certainly reccommend it to anyone, vamp lover or otherwise.

Soiled Doves - Anne Seagraves

Soiled Doves: Prostitution in the Early West caught my eye in several stores during my trip to Tombstone, AZ this past October. Having grown up in Las Vegas, NV, the topic wasn't unheard of by me, nor was it one of the things that was looked down on or disapproved of by me. I mean, you do what you've go to do sometimes, right? While in Tombstone, I learned two things that I probably should have known but surprised me anyway. #1: Both Wyatt Earp's wife, Mattie, and his later wife, Josephine, were both prostitutes. #2: Doc Holiday's girl, Kate (aka Big Nose Kate), was one as well.

Now, that probably shouldn't have surprised me, but it did. After reading this glimpse back in time, I came to understand just how much these women were needed in the Old West. Not only that, but they were often the first to supply money, time, or a place to rest for the ill, injured, and anyone affected by tragedy.

Life wasn't easy as a prostitute wasn't a citizen, ignored by the law and by society. However, they were relied upon by many in the communities they lived and worked in.

I would have liked to had more in-depth stories on the women featured in this book, however, it was a good, educational read either way. Well-written and very well researched. I highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the women of the old west.

As crazy as this combination sounds, it works and works well! Soledad is a spoiled brat doing just what she has to in order to keep from getting cut off. Tyler is stuck in the horrors of his past and unable to trust. Through a few mishaps and a lot of crossed wires, they eventually get to know one another and begin to trust all over again.

Very well written and spicy, without being overly graphic, Kissing Casanova was a nice change from your usual contemporary romance. Full of laughs as well as tender moments.

I had put this book on my wish list at PaperBackSwap solely on the merits of the title. And I am so glad that I did! You are dragged along behind Jen in her pursuit to lose weight and alienate everyone in the entire Chicagoland area. However, she figures some things about herself and her family along the way. Not to mention the plethora of laughs, wisecracks, and out and out insults that assault you along the way. A great read if you’re looking for a good belly laugh; a must read if you are trying or have EVER tried to lose weight.

This was one of the most unique, original vampire novels I have ever read. Despite her constant battle within herself, she is always fully aware of what is going on around her. She leads Boyd on the chase of his life only to end where it once began. Each chapter is told from Angelina’s point of view with ‘interviews’ at the end from those she meets in each chapter or from Boyd. Refreshing style and a great story.

Very highly recommended if you can find a copy!

All in all, a very emotional, very steamy novel that is more than well-worth the read!

I'll admit it, I think that the wolf-shifter/werewolf thing has been done to death. I feel the same way about vampires, however I have an undead fetish that just won't rest... So, when I looked at Call of the Wild, I wondered what it could bring to persuade me to feel otherwise about the shifter genre in general.

Sierra Dafoe not only brings you to a beautiful, isolated area in far northern Canada, she also brings the action with her. Fast-paced and engrossing, you're constantly wanting to know what's going to happen next, when Sarah's going to figure it all out and will she stay or will she go?

Sarah has given up on men after leaving a bad relationship. Larak and Kam are wary of the human in their lands. However, when Kam is injured, Sarah takes the wolf -and his human-looking (and very naked) possible poacher - in to heal. Only to discover the wolf is not just a wolf... and the (very naked) man is not just a man...

This was my first of Sierra's books and I was so happy when I got her newsletter in the e-mail this morning alerting me to a sequel. And thank the gods, she really left us hanging at the end of this one! I will definitely be looking into more of her work and soon.

I love the fact that her heroines are tiny, but powerful women, hell-bent on doing things their way and making it work. And to add fuel to the fire - she writes gripping stories that make you hunger for more. I highly recommend both the Black Planet series and the Imperative series, both from Changeling Press.

Some Joe Fanfic to Chew On

Yeah, I know. I’m a closet G. I. Joe-aholic. Er, okay, that’s not exactly true either. I’m pretty open about my obsession.

Anyway, a very kind lady on a Joe-related list mentioned two fanfics pairing my favorite of the Joe women, Lady Jaye, with one half of the Crimson Twins, Tomax. When she mentioned it, I was totally appalled – I mean really! Tomax? Not that Xamot is any better but still! ::shudders:: However… these two stories were so well written that I couldn’t help but be impressed.

So, go forth and read my young friends… LOL Even if you’re as squicked out by this pairing as I was, you might just enjoy it. I know I did, in a weird, voyeuristic sort of way…

The Tiger’s Cage ~ Lady Jaye encounters Tomax face to face for the first time while he's held prisoner during the events of "Pyramid of Darkness."

Dinner for Three ~ Whether Xamot likes it or not, Tomax takes Lady Jaye out for dinner. The one brother stays behind as an outlet for that which the other can not display in front of his guest.

And ya know what? I think there’s another somewhere…

And now that I’ve looked, I was wrong… there were two more. LOL

The Jungle ~ The Joes try to stop a Cobra plot, and get more than they bargained for.

Michael Crichton, whose technological thrillers like "The Andromeda Strain" and "Jurassic Park" had dominated best-seller lists for decades and had been translated into Hollywood mega-hits, died Tuesday in Los Angeles. He was 66 and lived in Santa Monica, California.

A statement released by his family gave the cause as cancer.

A doctor by training - he also created the hit television series "ER" - Crichton used fiction to explore the moral and political problems posed by modern technology and scientific breakthroughs, which in his books defied human control or ended up as tools used for evil ends. In his fictional worlds, human greed, hubris and the urge to dominate were just as powerful as the most advanced computers.

Crichton's fast-paced narratives often involved the arcana of medical technology, computer science, chaos theory or genetic engineering. But by combining old-fashioned storytelling with up-to-date, gee-whiz science, the books made for a compelling formula that was adapted easily by Hollywood. His books sold in the tens of millions and almost routinely became movies, many of them blockbusters like "Jurassic Park" and the sequel, "The Lost World," as well as "Rising Sun."

Reviewers often complained that Crichton's characters were wooden, that his ear for dialogue was tin and that his science was suspect.

Environmentalists raged against his skeptical views on climate change, first expressed in the 2004 novel "State of Fear" and subsequently in various public forums. Even his severest critics, however, confessed to having been seduced by his plots and unable to resist turning the pages, rapidly.

"He had a ferocious, brilliant intellect and the ability to write entertaining narratives," said Lynn Nesbitt, his agent since "The Andromeda Strain." "I can't think of many writers who can match that."

John Michael Crichton was born in Chicago, the oldest of four children, and grew up in Roslyn, New York, on Long Island. His father was the editor of Advertising Age and later president of the American Association of Advertising Agencies.

At Harvard, after a professor had criticized his writing style, the younger Crichton changed his major from English to anthropology and graduated summa cum laude in 1964. He then spent a year teaching anthropology on a fellowship at Cambridge University. In 1966, he entered Harvard's medical school and began writing on the side to help pay tuition.

Under the pseudonym John Lange, he wrote eight thrillers. Under the name Jeffery Hudson, he wrote "A Case of Need" (1968), a medical detective novel that revolved around the moral issues posed by abortion. It won an Edgar Award for best novel.

In 1969, after having earned his medical degree, Crichton moved to La Jolla, California, and spent a year as a postdoctoral fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. Already inclining toward a writing career, he tilted decisively with "The Andromeda Strain," a medical thriller about a group of scientists racing against time to stop the spread of a lethal organism from outer space code-named Andromeda.

With a breakneck, suspenseful plot that played out against a carefully researched scientific setting, the novel - he was now writing under his own name - became an enormous best-seller and a successful 1971 Hollywood film, a pattern that was to be repeated many times in the years to come. More than a dozen of Crichton's novels were made into movies, and he turned his hand to directing, screenwriting and producing for film and television along the way.

After having published the nonfiction book "Five Patients: The Hospital Explained" (1970), Crichton returned to the best-seller list with "The Terminal Man" (1972), an updated "Frankenstein" in which an accident victim goes on a killing spree after a tiny computer implant, intended to control his brain, malfunctions. Technology, for Crichton, never worked quite the way it was intended.

Having directed "Pursuit," an adaptation of one of his early novels, for television, Crichton turned to film, directing the low-budget "Westworld" (1973), for which he had written the screenplay, about a virtual-reality theme park that made it possible to enter ancient Rome or the old West.

Crichton followed up that quirky project with a series of departures. In the novel "The Great Train Robbery" (1975), he turned back the clock to Victorian England to tell the story of a genteel archcriminal (played by Sean Connery in the film) who relieves a speeding train of its cargo of gold bullion. That was followed by the novel "Eaters of the Dead" (1975), in which he plunged into the mist-shrouded world of the Vikings. "Jasper Johns" (1977), a straightforward biography of the painter, completed that set of projects.

After directing his adaptation of the Robin Cook novel "Coma," with Genevieve Bujold in the starring role, Crichton returned to familiar territory in the novel "Congo" (1980), about a team of hunters on a jungle expedition in search of a rare variety of diamond capable of being transformed into a power source more efficient than nuclear energy.

A remarkably facile writer, with a restless imagination, Crichton continued to juggle roles as a novelist, screenwriter and director. His marital schedule was also crowded; Crichton married five times.

He is survived by his wife, the former Sherri Alexander, and by a daughter, Taylor.

I was hooked from the moment I started reading this debut novel of Christie Cole’s. Not being a first person POV hater like a lot of people, I was eager to dive right in. It didn’t take me long to discover that Christie Cole has a very unique manner of presenting first person. First, the narrator almost seems to be looking back on the story as opposed to telling it as it’s happening. I know that sounds odd, but if you read it, you’ll understand. Also, several times throughout the story, you are treated to Paul’s point of view on what’s going on. This is a nice change of pace. You just start to think, “I wonder what Paul thinks about this?” and viola! You find out. However, she doesn’t overuse this option either.

The story is packed full of action, tension, growing, learning, and lots of goof-ups on EVERYONE’S part. Very well-written and I’m certainly looking forward to more stories by this author.

Okay, as you all know, I’m all for supporting my favorite authors! And well, Belinda’s not just a great author, she’s a great person as well. So, when I saw she’d posted a book trailer for the first book in her Imperative series, I knew I had to share with you.

All I can say is that Mother Nature doesn’t play nice. LOL The premise behind this series is so different from anything else I’ve ever read that I couldn’t help but buy Missing You. I was immediately hooked. I currently have Always You, book #2 in this series, sitting on my desktop just BEGGING to be read.

Better than Chocolate is no exception. She takes the idea of a lonely shape-shifting dragon and runs from there. After a confrontation with the man from her dreams – in real life on the subway - Silvana rushes into the safety of an erotic toy store. Little does she know, that chance encounter with Madam Periwinkle would change everything.

Steamy even by Lacey’s standards, Better than Chocolate is an exciting romp with fun, intriguing characters. Love the idea of the dragon shifter (soooo bored with your usual sifters thank you and yeah, I know, I’ll be shot at dawn for that comment…) and the problems that she has make things so much more interesting. And *cough* seriously, how can you pass up the idea of a chocolate dildo?

However, after such books like Beth Kery's Gateway to Heaven, I came to realize that there are some amazingly well-written and intriguing contemporary stories out there.

When the Past Came Back is one such story. Packed full of action, surprises, twists and turns, you never know what is coming next. And honestly? You're not ever left waiting for long either. Dani is conflicted and confused, she feels betrayed, and yet, despite her fears, she gives Cody a chance. She does hold him at arm's length, but he at least has the opportunity to make things right again. Cody, on the other hand, is calm, cool, and in charge. He is the alpha male minus the alpha, if that's possible. He takes charge, but never becomes domineering or overbearing.

Embarrassing fact about me: I HATE, LOATHE, and DESPISE alpha males. I wanna smack the crap out of them most times. I mean, hello! While I'm not the kind of woman who has to be in control 24/7, I do not like being bossed and or ordered around. So, why would I want to read about a man who is a control freak? LOL That's why I like Dakota Davis so much - he has that strong, alpha male potential, but he never crosses that line.

So, now that I've gabbed your eyeballs blurry, go buy this book. It was well-written and kept you wanting to find out 'what next'! I loved the surprises and even the 'I saw that coming' moments wound up surprising you just a bit.

Okay... and next up is Lacey Savage's Madame Periwinkle's Erotic Delights: Better Than Chocolate. How can you resist a story that involves a chocolate dildo? I mean, come on! And damn, me without my Popsicles... Lacey would be so disappointed...

I can’t even begin to tell you how intrigued I was to find a book set not just in Greece, but at an archeological site! Dr. Rafferty, my college geography teacher, was an anthropologist by trade and really instilled a love for archeology and anthropology in me. That said, this story was entirely too short! I want to know more! What happened really to Olympia’s family? What comes next? I’m a greedy reader, I can’t help it.

However, The Way to Olympia is a fast-paced and highly enjoyable story. Lucas is conflicted: he loves Olympia but he promised her brother, on his deathbed, that he wouldn’t touch her. Olympia has her own ideas, having been in love with Lucas for as long as she could remember. It seems that their hunt for the elusive Statue of Zeus is nearly as impossible as their coming together and becoming a couple.

While perusing his website (www.joeabercrombie.com), I came across a contact link for this man that has so inspired my husband to plow through three books in record time. So, being the author stalker that I am, I sent him an e-mail.

It read:

My husband has enjoyed The First Law books so much that, once he finished Before They Are Hanged, he went on a desperate search for Last Argument of Kings, only to discover it wasn't out here in the states yet. So, being the good wife (and book whore) that I am, I ordered it from Amazon.com.uk just so he didn't have to wait. He finished it last night and now he's sad. Me? I'm only just starting Before They Are Hanged, so I've got some time yet.

Thanks - It's been too long since I've read such a great fantasy series.

How freaking surprised to you think I was to receive a reply from him just ten days later?

My husband stumbled upon this series and when he started raving about it, I just had to find out what was so exciting about it! See, he’s not much of a reader (although he was so excited when I came home with Brisinger for him yesterday), so if he raves about a book, I know I have to read it.

Let me start by saying that, so far, Logen is by far my favorite character in this series. He’s charming in a rough sort of way, funny, and very thoughtful. Just what everyone wants in their barbarian, right?

This first installment in The First Law trilogy kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I had such a hard time putting it down! The characters are wide and varied in personality and background and yet, every one has their bit of appeal, good, bad or otherwise. A central theme of humor runs through this classic fantasy tale, lightening up the seriousness just a bit. I can’t wait to get into book 2, Before They Are Hanged, which is by my chair at home, waiting.

On one such excursion they come upon Bizenghast's biggest secret–an abandoned church and graveyard that no one can prove is really there. The teens disturb the inhabitants, and the consequence for Dinah is either to help the otherworldly creatures to release lost souls or to become one herself. Dinah is an interesting character with a quirky sense of style that will appeal to followers of the burgeoning gothic Lolita look. The story has a dreamlike quality, and the hint of possible romance with Vincent adds to the suspense. This first volume is chillingly spooky and fans will look forward to the next installment.

The artwork is superb and I am hooked on the story already. I can’t wait to see how it progresses. Have volume 2 on my wish list at PBS and am #5 of 5 so far… LOL The characters draw you in and the story really holds you.

But I really did enjoy this story, even if I wanted to bitch slap Vivian and kick John in the ass! I mean really, John! I get that you were hurt, been there, done that, but get over yourself already! LOL (Sorry Ms. Webb, I couldn’t help myself there).

But seriously…

The Long Road Home is an emotional roller coaster of a story. The intense passion that immediately flares between John and Clarisse upon reuniting is snuffed by anger, fear, and regret, only to be relit again and again by genuine emotion and humor. A story of self-discovery and forgiveness, Ms. Webb weaves an intriguing tale of what you only think are two stereo-typical people. Vivian is a character that you will love to hate, but has her place and really forces the story along its path home.

So there self… take that and start reading more contemp! LOL

What can I say, I’m a freaking blog addict. I mean, really. I have my personal blog, Ali’s blog, Shana’s blog, my LJ blog, my Live Space cookbook, two MySpace pages and Facebook… do I really need this too? Probably not, but um, well, here we go. LOL

I started this because I’m not sure how many people actually read my book reviews on my blog so I thought I’d separate them out and see. Who knows, maybe this might just be a good thing?

Oh, and I currently have about 15 book reviews that I need to blog about, so beware…
